According to a famous conjecture in
General Relativity, regular asymptotically flat, stationary, solutions
of the Ricci flat Einstein equations must belong to the $2-$ parameter
Kerr family of solutions. It is often assumed, wrongly as I will show,
that the conjecture was settled by works of Hawking, Robertson and
Carter. In fact this was done by assuming an unreasonable analyticity
assumption on the metric . In my talk I will address the main
difficulties which are arise in the case of smooth metrics and present
some
recent results obtained in collaboration with Alexakis and Ionescu.
