JAB vs UW
This is a record of my conflict with the University of Waterloo, a conflict which
resulted in my dismissal from the University in 1996.
The affair began with the merit rating assigned to me by C.C. Colbourn, Chair of the
Department of Combinatorics and Optimization,
for the year 1993. This rating was
the lowest in the entire Faculty of Mathematics. I was also denied a six-month sabbatical leave.
I lodged a grievance with the University Grievance Committee in August 1993, protesting these decisions, citing Colbourn and the Dean of Mathematics,
J.D. Kalbfleisch.
I intend to post here many of the documents regarding this dispute, including my correspondence with Professor Colbourn, Dean Kalbfleisch and the President of the University, J. Downey.
For the time being, I am posting
- My grievance lodged with the University Grievance Committee (August 8, 1994).
- The final report of the Grievance Committee (December 9, 1994).
- A letter from
Vasek Chvátal to the University of Waterloo Gazette (September 20, 1995).
- A response to Professor Chvátal's letter from
Dean Kalbfleisch (Gazette, September 20, 1995).
- The proceedings of my appeal against dismissal, as transcribed by Bruce Reed (January and February, 1996).
- The report of M.G. Picher, the adjudicator of my appeal against dismissal (September 16, 1996).
- A response to the Picher report from Jeff Shallit (Gazette, October 23, 1996; not included or even mentioned in their electronic archives).
- My response to the Picher report, and to Dean Kalbfleisch's Gazette letter, in an unsent letter to the Gazette (October, 1996).
- A letter from Paul Erdös to President Downey,
renouncing his honorary degree (June 4, 1996).
This fact has never, I believe, been reported by the University of Waterloo news services.
